Increasing diversity in my lab and in STEM

As a Puerto Rican woman, I understand first hand, the importance of diverse ideas and perspectives.

The support I received from my mentors as a student and the support I receive now from my colleagues has all been integral to what I have been able to accomplish.

Below are some of the small things I am doing in the hopes that I can increase diversity in my lab, lend support to the students of color already in the Department, and hopefully effect changes in STEM:

  • I create an open and welcoming academic environment that allows all of my students to feel safe and respected.
  • I foster a sense of belonging in both my lab and the classes I teach.
  • I have become an active member of the Animal Behavior Society Diversity Committee.
  • When positions become available in my lab, I will advertise with the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) Career Center-- so if you like what you see on this site, be on the lookout!
  • As my lab grows, we will educate ourselves on how systemic racism and bias have affected the ability of POC to excel in STEM.
  • I am working to start a SACNAS Chapter here at the University of Memphis-- all are welcome to join! Interested students should feel free to contact me!
