Future research
I will continue to investigate the behavioral ecology of species. Explorations into the behavioral synchrony between mares and foals, their communicative patterns, the role of play as a "plan B" for foals, and mare flexibility to adjust foal sex ratios to environmental conditions are all works in progress.
I will also continue my work on the effects of contraception management on feral horses. Specifically, I am planning to explore effects on the evolution of immune function and the potential for population-level effects in feral horses. My research will provide a better understanding of contraception management's effects on mare behavior and physiology, provide a model for managers dealing with similar issues in other species, and establish guidelines for the humane and effective use of PZP in horse populations across the United States.
I am also interested in the potential for contraceptive management to affect mate choice in African elephants (Loxodonta africana). In collaboration with biologists already on the ground, this research will apply the lessons learned from feral horses to another highly social and intelligent species currently under contraception management in South Africa.
